NITLE - Streaming Multimedia for Digital Libraries and Institutional Repositories such as DSpace

    1 Citation
As institutional repositories and digital libraries continue to grow, gain momentum, and acquire content, interest in including audio and video content in these collections is also growing. Yet managing large audio and video files can be challenging, particularly for users wishing to view or access these digital resources. Such files demand more storage and can introduce long wait periods during which files are downloaded to users' computers. Streaming servers can help campuses provide users with much more efficient access to these files, addressing the challenge of managing and using these resources., blogmarks.net

    xen:live-migration_infrastructure

In order to be able to do a live migration of a Xen guest from one cluster member to another, some sort of shared storage is required. As the Xen guest won?t run on more than one cluster member at a time, a cluster filesystem is not required. That is, as long as you configure Xen to access the Xen guest by a physical device, not a file., blogmarks.net

?DuraSpace,? a new web-based service that will allow institutions to easily distribute content to multiple storage providers, both ?cloud-based? and institution-based. The idea behind DuraSpace is to provide a trusted, value-added service layer to augment the capabilities of generic storage providers by making stored digital content more durable, manageable, accessible and sharable., blogmarks.net

It?s a relief to know that I?m not the only one that admires Fedora?s content model and wonders why DSpace should try to reinvent that with it?s ?2.0? vision versus adopting Fedora as a storage and web services layer and benefiting from a shared developer base., blogmarks.net

    Box Backup - Trac

    1 Citation
Box Backup is an open source, completely automatic, on-line backup system. It has the following key features: * All backed up data is stored on the server in files on a filesystem - no tape, archive or other special devices are required. * The server is trusted only to make files available when they are required - all data is encrypted and can be decoded only by the original client. This makes it ideal for backing up over an untrusted network (such as the Internet), or where the server is in an uncontrolled environment. * A backup daemon runs on systems to be backed up, and copies encrypted data to the server when it notices changes - so backups are continuous and up-to-date (although traditional snapshot backups are possible too). * Only changes within files are sent to the server, just like rsync, minimising the bandwidth used between clients and server. This makes it particularly suitable for backing up between distant locations, or over the Internet. * It behaves like tape - old file versions and deleted files are available. * Old versions of files on the server are stored as changes from the current version, minimising the storage space required on the server. Files are the server are also compressed to minimise their size. * Choice of backup behaviour - it can be optimised for document or server backup. * It is designed to be easy and cheap to run a server. It has a portable implementation, and optional RAID implemented in userland for reliability without complex server setup or expensive hardware., blogmarks.net
